The mission of KCI is to provide inmates with a realistic work experience and teach marketable job skills. This is part of an effort to improve their chances of securing gainful employment upon release from custody, reduce the state's recidivism rate and lower the Commonwealth's resource commitment for maintaining the prison system.
KCI receives no appropriated tax monies and generates all operating funds and expansion capital out of KCI profits. KCI incurs all the normal operating expenses, such as utilities, salaries, equipment replacement, etc., that any private sector company would incur. Each purchase that you make from KCI helps reduce the amount of tax dollars required from taxpayers. By making their purchases of office furnishings (and many other products) from KCI, agencies help keep needed revenues recycling internally within the state budget. This assists in the prevention of raising the tax burden placed upon the citizens of the Commonwealth.
The KCI showroom is open to the public, and the location and business hours are provided. We sell goods and services to any government agency, private business, or private individual within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Due to federal law, KCI is prohibited from selling products or services outside the Commonwealth of Kentucky, with the exception of sales to other governmental agencies.
